I’ve always been interested in esoteric and spirituality but as of recent I’ve been diving deeper into African American spirituality. Things like root work, Hoodoo, Voodoo, etc. To be quite honest I’ve always felt more of a connection with these beliefs as opposed to my Baptist upbringing. The history and lore behind the practices are so fascinating to me. I feel a much deeper connection to my ancestors and heritage than I did simply attending an HBCU. Not that I take that experience for granted nor would I ever want to change the fact I can proudly call myself a Spelmanite. But if it wasn’t for the ancestral veneration that fuels these beliefs I would not have begun my deep dive into my family tree. Turns out I’ve asked far more questions and began unearthing A LOT more than anyone has on either side of my family in decades. It’s been exciting but most of all healing.
